The Homestead Exemption is for homeowners age 65 and older, the surviving spouse of an eligible person previously on the Homestead program, and homeowners who are "totally and permanently disabled" as certified by a licensed physician or psychologist, or a state or federal agency, who own and occupy a home as their principal place of residence as of January 1, of the tax year for which they are applying. Household income cannot exceed $31,000 as determined by the Ohio adjusted gross income tax of the owner and the owner's spouse.
The Homestead Exemption provides a reduction of up to $25,000 of the market value of the home to qualifying homeowners. Depending upon the tax rate in your district, the Homestead Exemption will save you $400 on average.
