CHL PROCEDURE – NEW APPLICANT
The Stark County Sheriff's Office is providing the listed information to accurately inform the public on the procedures to follow regarding the Carrying Concealed Handgun Law. This information is being provided to give citizens guidance in making an application for a Concealed Handgun License (CHL) in Stark County.
- The applicant must first obtain eight (8) hours of weapons proficiency training as required by the law. (Check with local sporting goods stores, gun clubs or colleges). Ensure the instructors offering the weapons training have a certificate of training from the National Rifle Association, the Ohio Police Officer Training Academy, or a National Gun Advocacy group and are certified as instructors to teach firearms training. Ask to see their credentials and certification.
- MILITARY: Per requirements of SB81, we will need a copy of your DD214 that clearly states honorable discharge or if you are still on active duty then your current military ID to take advantage of SB81.
- Upon successful completion of the training and receipt of a firearm training certificate from the training entity, the applicant must COMPLETE a CHL Application. The form should be made available to you where you obtained your weapons training or online at Ohio Attorney General.
